Promptography? Ever heard of it? And what does it have to do with Art? You are not alone, but in the foreseeable future it will be the number 1 word you will come accross when it comes to Art and AI usage!

Let us take a look at what Promptography is and what it can do for you!

What is Promptography?

Promptography is a term that has emerged in the realm of generative AI and digital art. It refers to the creation of visual content, such as images, artwork or other visual means using text-based prompts that instruct an AI model to generate specific results.

Why should I care?

Promptography is going to revolutionise several industries like Art, Marketing and Entertainment. Should you either be a professional in one of these industries or a privat person interested in visually appealing media (who isn’t really), you will sooner or later come in touch with results generated by Promptography.

How does Promptography work?

Those using tools like midjourney, DALLE or Stable Diffusion can generate visuals with the help of so called prompts aka word-based instructions. This tools have been trained on the basis of billions of images to generate accurate representation of your prompt.

Let us take a look what Midjourney generated for me with the following prompt:

Oil portrait of a lion in a red suit posing in front of a dark background with paint dripping at the bottom of the image

What can it do for me?

Promptography can help you with several things. One area in which Promptography will become meaningful is in the Art generation area. Within seconds you can generate personal and unique art illustrations, visuals and even painting based on simple text-based prompts.

What is the “Catch” with Promptography?

Promptography comes with several benefits, but also has some downsides. First of all, Art generation tools are not all the same. Some generate outstanding quality images other less so. Usually good Art generation tools such as Midjourney require you to be a paying subscriber.

Secondly, AI Art generation is often not without flaws. You will find certain pixels in a perfekt generated image that you would like to have changed or replaced with something different. This requires at a bit of editing or at worst complex and timely image manipulation.

Thirdly, Images from prompts are in a low resolution. If you wish to have an image printed out you will be disappointed with the results. The amount of your disappointment is proportionet with the size of the print you wanted to have the image be printed on. To have AI generated images printed you need to improve their quality aka upscale their quality, so that image quality is sharp and cohesive.

Promptography?
This is the new name being suggested for AI-generated photography. Can I get a NOPE?
Promptography – From Text to Photographic Art - AI-ARTS
Promptography – From Text to Photographic Art New technologies have consistently given rise to new artistic directions. Photography introduced us to photorealistic art, computers led to digital art, video cameras enabled videography, and the internet fostered net art. In the realm of contemporary AI art, an exciting development is unfolding: promptography, where artists create photographs based on textual prompts. Swedish artist Annika Nordenskiöld recently won first prize at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in Australia in the new category called “prompted peculiar” for AI-generated photographs. Among 200 other images in the category, she triumphed with her work titled “Twin Sisters in Love.” The photograph depicts two women embracing an octopus in black and white. The jury’s motivation highlighted how the image intersects with art historical and cultural references while subtly subverting the documentary genre of photography. Octopuses and other surreal elements frequently recur in Annika’s photographs. Collaborating with Midjourney, her goal with promptography isn’t to create flawless images but rather to explore the absurd and dreamlike scenarios that can emerge in AI-generated art, characterized by unconventional anatomy and fragmented compositions. Annika has published several of her AI-generated promptographs in the book “From Nothing,” released by the Swedish publishing house Max […]
